The name comes from an island that no longer exists
Before the reservoir, a rocky rise in the Catawba River stood high enough above the water that locals called it Mountain Island. The 1923 dam raised the river and drowned the landmark. The name survived on the lake, the dam, the hydro station, and eventually on schools, roads, and a stretch of suburb that sits nowhere near a mountain. The corridor, not the postcard
The Charlotte side of Mountain Island is a working suburb — schools, churches, groceries, ballfields, and long-tenured neighborhoods that predate the current wave of building. The Gaston and Lincoln sides are quieter and more rural, with farm parcels still interrupting the subdivisions. The one thing every part shares is the reservoir at the center and the protected land around it: over a thousand acres of preserve and park shoreline that will never be developed because the water below it is drinking water.
Who lives here and why
The draw is proximity without volume. You can be in uptown Charlotte in half an hour and on quiet water in five minutes. There is no commercial waterfront, no marina strip, and very little through traffic on the water, so the lake reads as a neighborhood amenity rather than a destination. That combination is what keeps waterfront inventory here so thin — people move in and stay.

In everyday use they are the same place. Technically, the lake is the 3,281-acre reservoir between the Cowans Ford and Mountain Island dams; "Mountain Island" is the broader area that grew around it.
