Latta Nature Preserve

Latta is the reason the northeast shore of this lake looks the way it does. A county preserve on a long peninsula off Sample Road in Huntersville, it holds hardwood forest, meadow, wetland, and miles of undeveloped waterfront inside the Mountain Island Lake watershed. For residents it functions as the lake's back yard; for the reservoir it functions as a filter.

Paddling from Latta

The preserve's access points put you straight into narrow, wooded water with almost no powerboat traffic — the best introduction to this lake there is. Early morning, before the wind, you will see heron, osprey, and often eagles.
